Seetha KalyaaNa Vaibhogamey...

I am a big fan of Artist Maya's Wedding Cards. Infact I wanted to have my wedding cards printed from them but work kept me so busy that I could not have them done. Also my parents wanted to print a more traditional one. Anyways...

There's a site available where you can go and check these cards out. Here goes the link:-

The photo shows 'Oonjal' an important ceremony in tambram weddings where relatives(mostly old aunties of the couple) take aarthi of the couple, keep 'nalangu' while singing 'Kannoonjal aadi irundhaal kanchanamalai', 'Gowri KalyaaNa Vaibhogamey, Seetha KalyaaNa Vaibhogamey '!

I didn't know about this person or entity. I live very close to Ashok Nagar and could have leveraged the proximity to get the cards done.

The photo remains me of the times I'd have to dodge the colour laddus thrown by the maamis doing the nalangu. :-)
Expert bomb throwers, they were!
Mappilai would be resting from the kasi yatra. Bride would be happy that the mappillai didn't run away. Onlookers would be dodging the laddus! lol.

very nice pic. looks very real.

btw, was this one drawn atleast a few decades ago... notice the right most maami's blouse design. I do not think anyone wears such colours/strips anymore.

wow.. interesting that tradition is relly interesting to me and i enjoyed when ever i had been to brahmins marriage. i noticed a smal difference among the tradition even among the brhamins.

for ex. while the bride sits on the oonjal - one sect of brahmin gal will wear madizar and other sect doesnt. as per brahmins comunity understanding - madizar is a dress that woman wears once gets into married family life. the oonjal celebration is before khaniya dhanam or ( some other name also used - i forgot) but in one sect of brahmins community even before the khaniya dhannam i mean the marriage took place the gal will be in madizar. have you noticed it ? they give a reason too.. in this photo - the bride is in arugajam saree and not in madizar. so this is a marriage picture of not that sect of brahmins.

Isint it interesting ? similiarly there are some mintue things in this oonjal tradition which lamp to use - kamatchi lamp or some other. if you are palagat brahmin you wont use kamatchi lamp.

i enjoy finding the finer details of the old customs.
